I got back yesterday from spending a week with my family in southern California. My parents have been living on my grandparents' dairy in Chino for the last 10 years, running it for them as they move towards retirement. The cows have been off the place for quite a while, so my parents have been working as custodians at their church. The land deal finally went through last year, so my parents will be moving off the place in the next few weeks. After my parents move, it'll be bulldozed to make room for more of the gigantic warehouses that have been sprouting up all over "dairy country." My parents will be renting a house nearby, while planning to move to South Dakota, where things are a lot less busy and a lot less expensive. They're hoping to help my brothers start a dairy out there.
In the mean time, Steven has been working at a marketing company that stocks and sets up displays at supermarkets all over southern California. Nick has had his own trucking business for about 2 years- he usually hauls materials for construction and road work. Lewis just got a new job as a mechanic on a pit crew for a race team that drives alcohol funny cars. Over the next year he gets to travel around the country following the races.

Wow, I didn't know about the moving plans and that they got rid of the cows in CA. Kinda sad how development wins in the end but fun and exciting to start new somewhere else. Perhaps, you can come to MN if you'll already be visiting in SD or we could come there. One of our good friend's farm business is to raise dairy heifers for large dairies in MN and the neighboring states. Perhaps they'll get into business with your brother's dairy too. Where in SD are they moving?

the 909 is the area code...i guess it was kind of a fad a while back to wear your area code on hooded sweatshirts or something.
we have family in platte, so they wanted to go there, but there is a dairy for sale in wagner that they like also. so i guess pretty much the eastern part of the state. that would definately be cool to meet up somewhere if that happens!
Thanks for the update, Donna! How strange that your parents won't be in Cali anymore. I am quite happy, though, at the thought of driving out to hang with you- whether in California or SD!

Thanks for sending me the link to your blog. Its been kind of fun checking up on everyone. Sorry to hear that the parents will be moving. I don't think there are too many dairies left there any more? Kind of sad but I guess that's life. You're still living by San Jose?

there aren't very many dairies left- my grandparents' is the second last one to sell on their street- soon the whole place will be industrial buildings. but i think my parents are excited to start a new chapter.
john and i are still living near san jose. we're possible going in the peace corps this summer- we've been accepted, but are just going through the medical exams. if the peace corps doesn't work out for some reason, then we're hoping to move to san francisco! :)
