Our friends Karen and JR were blessed with a beautiful baby boy late Tuesday night. His name is Evan Aurel Sudre. It was a surprise because he was a little over a month early, but both he and Karen are doing well.

I'm It Too
So I've been tagged by both Bridget and Megan. Since my brain is a little fried from looking at HTML code (still working out a few kinks), I'm not going to answer all of the questions....

Linguini
When I was in grad school, I would often take the bus to SJSU. It was pretty entertaining- you get a big mix of people taking public transportation downtown. Now and then a random person would strike up a conversation with me, seeing my backpack or an open book, and ask what I was studying.
"Linguistics," I would tell them.
Usually people would have a blank or confused look on their faces for a second or two before saying, "Oh. So what languages do you speak?"
After several similar exchanges I would get a little annoyed when some random person would ask me that question, even though I expected it. I guess the majority of "linguists" people are familiar with are translators who are given that title by the military or corporations, regardless of whether they have any formal training in linguistics.
My co-worker Dave, a linguist, recently started a blog on linguistics and anthropology. His first post describes the difference between a linguist and someone who speaks more than one language, and clarifies that being one doesn't necessarily mean that you are the other.

babies on ice
Today I went to a baby shower for my friend Karen that I co-hosted with Elaine and two relatives of the mother-to-be. It was a lot of fun. We got to plan a few games for the party (you would not believe the multitude of baby-related games out there). We played one game that involved tiny plastics babies, which were frozen in ice cubes. The idea was that everyone gets a baby, and over time they have to anxiously watch their baby and wait for it to be "born", or melt free from the ice cube. Fun game, but there was a bit of a logistical issue with the babies, as they melted a bit on the way to the shower, and I didn't have enough time to refreeze them all the way. So everyone had a super short labor, as it were, and a couple of the babies were born within a minute or two. Luckily we had more games, including the "dirty diaper" game, which I also have some pictures for, but I decided to spare you the visual, since they looked pretty realistic. Let's just say melting and mashing a candy bar in a diaper, and then passing it around for people to smell it is pretty hilarious. On a side note, here's a picture of the bow we designed for the present from me and Elaine. We were very proud of our creation.

civic duty overload
I don't often pay much attention to local politics, but yesterday there was a proposition on library funding on the ballot, so I dragged myself out of bed to my designated polling station. This time it was in a small town next to me, and at 9:30 in the morning I was only the 30th person to vote. This is probably due to low voter turnout as much as anything else, but it reminded me of the time I voted for a presidential election in a mall in a small town in Iowa during college. My memory is a little fuzzy, but I seem to remember learning that they would set up the portable DMV at the same place. Right there in the middle of the mall, shoppers having to skirt around the cubicle-type walls and folding chairs.
Later in the day, to further increase my appearance as a patriotic person, I worked for a coworker at a "command center" (I believe that was the term used) collecting and taking inventory of the voting supplies being return by the local precincts. Before working we were all sworn in- which included an oath to uphold the constitution. I had never really thought about all the work involved in voting, and all the tired people returning the voting paraphernalia at the end of a long day. We didn't finish until 11pm.
Later I learned that the proposition for library funding didn't pass. *sigh*
On a lighter note, I realize that some of you might not have had the pleasure of seeing one of the best music videos ever made: America We Stand As One. It takes some time to load, but is well worth the wait.
